bio

I am an assistant professor of English and Africana Studies at Washington and Lee University and have been a PEN USA Emerging Voices Fellow, a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in the Society for the Humanities at Cornell, and a Jentel Artist in Residence. I have published both creative and critical work in Callaloo, Black Renaissance/Renaissance Noire, Stirring: A Literary Collection, and CR: The New Centennial Review. My first academic book, The Nigrescent Beyond: Mexico, the United States, and the Psychic Vanishing of Blackness, is under advance contract with Northwestern University Press and I am at work on a follow-up fiction project based on the avant-garde theater director Robert Wilson’s “Deafman Glance.”
